The Maldives is known for its sandy shores, turquoise waters, and overwater bungalows, But recent unfavorable remarks from the Maldives towards India are leading many tourists to reconsider the Maldives as their destination. And now, Indian tourists are looking for better alternatives to the Maldives.

If you are one of them then, fear not; you are in the right place. In this article, we are going to explore some of the better islands in India and near India for your next vacation.

Maldives vs. Lakshadweep

Before jumping to the list of alternatives, let’s have a look at what happened recently between India and Maldives.

You may all be aware of this news, but if not then, let me explain it to you in short.

It all started when Prime Minister of India Modi, posted some pictures and videos of him when he was on a visit to Lakshadweep where he appealed to Indian tourists to visit the Islands of Lakshadweep instead of seeking it out abroad.

His tweet

After his tweets, the Maldives’ Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts commented on his tweets and used some bad words for PM Modi. and promoted her country? maybe she thought PM Modi was targeting the Maldives? But he was just promoting his country’s tourism.

her tweet

After that, It started like a digital war? Where Indians started boycotting the Maldives by canceling their vacations there. Then, in response, Maldivians started passing racist comments towards Indian tourists. And It led to a bigger conflict.

And then, blah, blah, blah, happened… Maldivian’s government suspended those Ministers, Thousands of flights and hotel bookings got canceled, and many more consequences.

So, now Indian tourist wants Lakshadweep as an alternative to the Maldives. But is Lakshadweep ready for that?

To know that we have to compare Lakshadweep with its competitor, the Maldives. and I know the comparison is a bad manner but let’s just compare it with a traveler mindset.

We have some parameters, let’s start with the first one.
(Note:- We will be more focused on Indian tourists, but you still can get an overview for everyone.)

1. Accessibility:

Both Lakshadweep and Maldives are well connected by flights. Where Maldives has better international flights. On the other hand, going to Lakshadweep could be challenging as visitor typically needs permits.

But for an Indian tourist, It’d be easier to access Lakshadweep as it’s a destination that caters more to domestic tourists.

2. Tourist Infrastructure:

Maldives has better resorts, hotels, and guesthouses as it has a well-established tourism industry. It allows them to cater their services to various budgets.

Whereas Lakshadweep is less developed in the tourism industry. But they are more focused on providing authentic and serene experiences.

3. Cost:

Maldives is considered to be an expensive tourist destination especially if you include luxury resorts and hotels.

On the other hand, Lakshadweep is more like a budget-friendly destination, which makes it an attractive affordable option for a budget traveler.

4. Cultural Experience:

Even though Maldives has a unique culture that is mostly influenced by South Asian, Arab, and African cultures and traditions, yet focus is more on resort experiences rather than cultural experiences.

Lakshadweep offers more authentic cultural experiences. Travelers can see the way of a local’s life, traditions, customs, and culture, which provides a closer look at the region’s heritage.

5. Marine Life and Snorkeling:

Maldives is also famous for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. it’s a great destination for diving enthusiasts.

Lakshadweep also offers rich marine biodiversity which makes it a great destination for underwater activities. Plus it’s less crowded and provides great scheduled experiences.

6. Environmental Conservation:

Maldives is facing challenges such as rising sea levels and coral bleaching. Whereas Lakshadweep is known for its commitment to environmental prevention.

Implementation of measures to protect the fragile ecosystem by the government of India makes it an eco-friendly destination.

In My Opinion, Maldives is more like an international luxurious vacation destination, And Lakshadweep is recognized as the budget-friendly option that focuses on authentic experiences and environmental conservation. So, we should not see them as the same kind of tourist destination.

And, let’s not destroy the authenticity and the environment of Lakshadweep. And let’s find out other alternatives to the Maldives.
